Biography

The subject areas in polymer technology, chemical processing technology and raw materials rubber, plastics technology include characterization, Supervisor’s undergraduate and postgraduate students. My main expertise is in materials science research, polymer chemistry and processing, with most of my time in nanotechnology research projects. My current research studies are in polymer composites and nanocomposites for packaging applications, thus, involves improving the barrier properties, mechanical properties, thermal stability of polymers by blending them with other polymers and reinforce them with nanoparticles.

I have extensive knowledge of the different polymers production operations using twin-screw extruder for compounding, Injection moulding, 5-layer film blower extrusion, casting machine. I also have extensive knowledge on different types of polymers like HDPE, LDPE, PP, PVC. Other techniques that I have a good understanding include Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The operation of some of these techniques has exposed me to various scientific disciplines. In my professional experienced, I have developed the following skills: time management, interpersonal, quality management, leadership (thus, to manage people), technical report writing and presentation skills. I am currently northern branch chairperson of Plastics Institution of South Africa (PISA).
