The remaining two modules allow students to specialize in either Inorganic, Organic or Physical/Polymer Chemistry.

  • CHH400 : Chemistry Honours – main course
    Requirements: BSc degree majoring in Chemistry; at least 60% for CH300 or equivalent. Students with a lower mark than 60% could be considered provided other criteria such as completion of the degree within the minimum prescribed period are met.

  • CHR410 : Industrial Chemistry
    (10 credits; 15 lectures)

Option A - Inorganic Chemistry

CHI410 : Inorganic Theory (22 credits; 51 lectures) Coordination Chemistry Electronic spectroscopy Inorganic reaction mechanisms Solvent extraction CHI411 : Analytical/Inorganic Practical (22 credits) Prescribed practicals (60 sessions) in the fields of Analytical/Inorganic, Organic and Physical/Polymer chemistry, in equal proportion. Mini-research project in the field of Analytical/Inorganic Chemistry.

Option B - Organic Chemistry

CHO410 : Organic Theory (22 credits; 50 lectures) Advanced organic synthesis ‘Green’ chemistry Natural product chemistry Organic reaction mechanisms Pericyclic reactions and frontier orbital theory CHO411 : Organic Practical (22 credits) Prescribed practicals (60 sessions) in the fields of Analytical/Inorganic, Organic and Physical/Polymer chemistry, in equal proportion. Mini-research project in the field of Organic Chemistry.

Option C - Physical/Polymer Chemistry

CHP410 : Physical/Polymer Theory (22 credits; 55 lectures) Adhesion and coatings chemistry Polymer science Polymer thermodynamics Polymerisation kinetics Solid state reactions CHP411 : Physical/Polymer Practical (22 credits) Prescribed practicals (60 sessions) in the fields of Analytical/Inorganic, Organic and Physical/Polymer chemistry, in equal proportion. Mini-research project in the field of Physical/Polymer Chemistry.

Postgraduate research

We offer excellent research environment and opportunity to work under the supervision of some of the best scientists in the field through taking one of our standard research degrees – MSc and PhD.

CHG501: Our MSc degree is a research degree, which is awarded on the basis of a written dissertation. There is no course work component to the MSc. In exceptional cases, it is possible to upgrade an MSc to a PhD.

CHG601: Our PhD degree is also a research degree, which is awarded on the basis of a written thesis. Unlike the MSc, it is necessary that the research undertaken for the PhD make an original contribution to science. The PhD is usually read under the supervision of the academic staff within one of our sections (Inorganic, Analytical, Organic, Physical, Polymer) although joint supervision between the sections is possible and does occur.
